Travel eSIM FAQ
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that's built into your smartphone — no physical card to insert or swap. Instead of buying a plastic SIM, you download a mobile plan digitally by scanning a QR code. It's especially useful for travelers because you can switch between carriers or countries without changing cards. Just scan, activate, and you're connected to local networks wherever you go. Read our complete guide to eSIM.
How do I install an eSIM?
After receiving your QR code, go to Settings on your phone and select "Cellular" or "Mobile Network." Tap "Add Cellular Plan" (iPhone) or "Add Mobile Plan" (Android), then scan the QR code with your camera. Follow the on-screen prompts — this takes 30–60 seconds. Label your new plan (e.g., "Travel Data") and enable it. Your eSIM is installed and ready to activate when you reach your destination. For step-by-step guides with screenshots, visit our iPhone guide or Android guide.
Can I use eSIM and my regular SIM at the same time?
Yes, absolutely. Most smartphones support dual SIM, meaning you can use both a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time. A common setup for travelers is to keep your home SIM active for calls and texts, while using the eSIM for mobile data. This way, you avoid roaming charges but stay reachable on your regular number. Just enable data on the eSIM, not your home SIM.
Is my phone compatible with eSIM?
The easiest way to check: dial *#06# on your phone. If you see an "EID" number (a 32-digit code), your phone supports eSIM. Most smartphones from 2018 onward have this feature, including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3+, and Samsung Galaxy S20+. If no EID appears, your device doesn't support eSIM. Check our compatibility page for your specific model.
Can I make phone calls with an eSIM?
It depends on the plan. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, meaning they don't support traditional calls or SMS. However, you can make calls using WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, or Skype over your data connection — often with better quality than regular calls. Your physical SIM stays active in dual SIM mode, so you won't miss calls or texts on your home number. Use eSIM for data, your regular SIM for voice.
